Fabric Preparation--
Again, there are rules and there are rules--whatever
works best for you. Some general guidelines apply:
1. Work with the selvedge side on the left or right; there is not a front or
back to the fabrics.
2. Compare the chart you are working from to determine size based on
thread count of the fabric; if you work it on the recommended count, it should
be the same size. If you change to a different count, it will be either larger
or smaller.
3. Allow at least 3-4 inches on each side of the fabric to allow for
mounting and/or finishing.
4. If fabric has creases iron it before you begin; in the case of dark or
brightly colored fabrics you may want to rinse it before you use it to remove
any excess dyes that may run later. Of course, do not wet any hand-dyed fabrics
or "reproduction" fabrics.
5. The cut edges can be left at they are (if you don't mind the little bit of
fraying), or they can be overcast or serged to prevent fraying. Another
alternative is to use Fray Check on the edges.
6. The design should be centered on the fabric, so find the center by folding
the fabric in half both horizontally and vertically.
