Estimating the Amount of Thread Required--

First, there is the word "estimate;" there are many variables to determine the actual amount of thread required for a project. The stitcher's tension is important, as well as the stitch chosen. In general, for tent stitch and basketweave, a good rule of thumb is to purchase 1.25 yards of thread for each square inch. This formula is pretty much an industry-wide standard.

The best way to determine actual thread usage is to work a square inch of the stitch on the same size canvas and measure the actual amount of thread used.
