Appleton Crewel Wool. Silk Road Needle Arts is proud to be one of the few stores in the region carrying this fine English wool. Available in 27-yard skeins and 195-yard hanks. ($1.95/$6.10)

 

Excellent for both crewel embroidery and needlepoint. Spun and dyed in England. Available in 421 colors with an extensive range of shades in each color family! Many of these colors are not as bright as the Paternayan colors, indicating the more reserved “continental” taste. Tightly twisted and strong, a worsted yarn. The preferred yarn for needlepoint among English and European designers.  Easily blended in the needle to create shading effects and thousands of colors/shades.

 

To avoid differences in dye lots you may want to get all of your wool for the project at one time. (With crewel wool this is not as big a problem since the colors between dye lots can often be blended in the needle by choosing individual plies; tapestry yarn is generally not meant to be separated, so you could have mismatched background areas)

 

Estimating:  A 27 yard skein of crewel yarn covers approximately 11 sq. inches on 18 count canvas (used 2 ply) and about 5.5 sq. inches on 13 count canvas (assuming 4 ply used). A 195 hank covers approximately 78 sq. inches on 18 count (used 2 ply) and approximately 39 square inches on 13 count (used 4 ply.)

Note: If you prefer to use Appleton Tapestry Yarn, we stock a number of the background colors; we can special order any color for you! Appleton Tapestry works best on 12 canvas and is available for the same price in 27-yard skeins or 195-yard hanks. (If you are using #10 canvas, you will get better coverage mixing one ply of crewel with the tapestry yarn.)
